Sorry for not being around and writing new blog entries lately! I have been having some medical problems and running my father to many follow up appointments from his accident. And after much thought of recent events in my life I have decided to make a change. For a long time I have struggled with being overweight. But the last few years I have become so heavy that I had to give up almost everything I love. I haven’t been able to go bowling, hunting or anything that had a lot of walking. I have become type 2 diabetic, high blood pressure and so on. The good thing is my cholesterol is great. I thought about the surgery option for awhile but have been to scared until now. I have done a lot of reading and talking to both people that have had the stomach stapling and the lap band. I know the risk of both but living like I am won’t end in anything good.

It is truly a life changing event that I can’t wait to start on. There has been a lot of advances in this area in the last few years and it is a lot safer than it use to be. But it is still a major surgery. I know it won’t be easy or painless but the good things in life usually aren’t. I go to a seminar in about a week to learn more about pre and post surgery things that need to be done. It takes like 4 – 5 months before you have the surgery. This is so you can go to a nutritiousness, get a psych eval and a whole list of other things that need to be done. I am truly excited about this next chapter in my life. I will be updating all as this next chapter unfolds in my life. Thank you all for the support that you have been giving me. If any one has had this done or knows of someone that has had it done please send me an email about it. Good or bad I would like to hear about it.

I can’t wait to get out in the outdoors hunting again. I really miss the smell of the wilderness and the memories that can be made.

I would love to hear your opinion or thoughts about mine. If you want to leave it as a comment that is fine. Or you can email it to me at reelandsteel.com@gmail.com.

Also if you have a story that you would like to share as a guest blogger or pics you would like to post on the website email them to me also.

Have a great day all and enjoy your days in the outdoors!

I can remember back when there was only like a couple baits to use for Trout fishing. We had worms, salmon eggs and corn maybe more but that is all I can think of right now. They work great most of the time. Now days there is a lot of different kinds of bait out there. I remember when Power Bait first came out. It worked like magic on those fish. Then they came out with different types of color combos and then the started making the formed kind of bait. I remember a guy telling me and showing me how he took the power bait and rolled it around the hook to look like a worm. Of course I had to try it. I will be dammed if it didn’t work great. After a little while he came over and said to now take a little bit and roll it in your hands and then place it towards the top of the “worm” and now you have a crawfish. That guy was on to something because it wasn’t long after that and they started to make preformed bait. They now have so many different kinds it is crazy. I have a bunch of different ones like maggots, jig bait, worms and others.

I am also a sucker for those as seen on TV crap. I have tried all of them like the helicopter lure and ones I can’t remember. They all sucked but I won’t say that they were a waste of money because anytime you get out in the outdoors is a blessing. The best thing I ever bought for fishing was the pocket fisherman. I freaking love that thing I put it behind the back seat in the truck with some power bait and when the urge hits I am ready!

I still love the salmon eggs they are always a good choice. When they hit that you know it. No nibbling with them they just take it and go. I remember my pap trying to get me to use them and I couldn’t catch them. It took a while to get use to them but once you do you will love them.

Again it all comes back to the memories we make when we get a chance to spend time with loved ones and the great outdoors! So get of the internet and go make some memories and then send them to be with some pics. I would love to post it here as a guest blogger.

I would love to hear your opinion or thoughts about mine. If you want to leave it as a comment that is fine. Or you can email it to me at reelandsteel.com@gmail.com.

Sitting here thinking about the great times that I have had with friends and family really is a great thing! Like the times my grandfather took me fishing just so we could have a great talk about life. Most of the times it was just about life lessons that he learned and wanted to pass on to me. For me it really didn’t matter about what he was saying as much as I got to go fishing with him I thought. But know I can look back and see that those talks that I miss so much were so much more. They have made me the man I am today. A caring good person who spent most of my time as a vol. firefighter and emt. Don’t get me wrong that you have to volunteer to be a good person but I believe you need to get involved in stuff in order to have a say in life.

I have done my best to pass all this on to my son and I hope in someway he understands the importance of these lessons. I will always cherish the time I spend with him fishing, playing video games or just hanging out. Like most kids when you talk to them sometimes they roll there eyes like OK whatever and probably say something like I hope I don’t do this to my kids. But he will because I know I thought the same thing! You can only do your best and hope that they make the best choices in life that they can! The thought of him going to college is scaring the hell out of me. But a life lesson he will have to make.

With that said I wonder about the way some older kids act today. Is it the way that they were brought up? Maybe the environment they grew up in? Or maybe they are just that way. I have noticed that the young kids that are getting about 15 or 16 years old seem much more respectful than the ones a little older then them. I hope this trend keeps going because disrespect is something that I can’t stand.

I am sure we all know that the season is just around the corner but now is the time to check all your gear. Get them guns out and check them over and give them some TLC. Don’t forget to check and see if you have enough ammo. and your hunting clothes may be a little ripped so go get some new stuff. Don’t do what I did one time and forget to get your license until you were already hunting. Just as important is checking with the place that you hunt to see if anything has changed. Or see if the owners need a hand with anything like posting signs or anything else. Get those knives sharpened now because you never know when you will need them. Ok I think you get the point!

One other thing that I think is a must is a digital camera. Why you ask because I want you all to send me your pics to post here of course!

Plus it gives you a reason to go to the sports shop and have some fun checking out the new things that have come out. An example is the White-Tailed Deer Measuring Tape by Lawson Industries. I will let you know more about it soon. For now check it out here!

I truly hope everyone has a great time this hunting season and stays safe! Remember to clean up after yourself so it doesn’t ruin it for others!

I would love to hear your opinion or thoughts about mine. If you want to leave it as a comment that is fine. Or you can email it to me at reelandsteel.com@gmail.com.

I am sitting here watching the Eagles just destroy the Jaguars and loving it. Yeah I now it is early in the game and it is only preseason. I really am not a fan of either team but I would have to pick the Eagles. One reason would be they finally got rid of Mcnabb. He should have been gone along time ago. I never thought he really was that good. His replacement Kolb seems like he will do well. As far as Vick goes he is an idiot that shouldn’t be playing anymore. His actions off the field prove to me that he doesn’t deserve to be in a pro team were kids look up to him as a role model. The other player that stands out to me to watch is wide receiver Riley Cooper. He seems to have hands of glue because if that ball is thrown any were around him he gets it. My wife says she loves his hair! What does that have to do with it?

If my team the Cowboys don’t make it to the Superbowl then I guess for my friends that are Eagle fans I hope they make it. They probaly will choke like always but you never know. The memories of going to games or watching them on TV are priceless. To this day my best bud Ken still picks on me about screaming and throwing stuff when I am 100% sure that there was a penalty and there is no call from the refs. Like when USC cheated to beat Notre Dame with the Bush push! Plus the called a time out when they didn’t have any. That is a penalty people. He tells me that I am seeing things. But that is what is the best about great friends you can depend on them to bring you back to earth! Even if they are wrong and you are right. Ken there should have been a flag!!!!

With the preseason games starting it makes me very excited for the regular season to start. My son starts practicing Monday for his senior year with the winningest high school football team in New Jersey the Phillipsburg Stateliners. My favorite collage team the Fighting Irish have a new coach hopefully he can get them back to winning form. And last but not least the Cowboys look real good. I know people say that Romo sucks but his records say different. Yeah he has some rough time in the playoffs but I forgive him. I can’t forgive him for breaking up with Jessica Simpson.

I would love to hear your opinion or thoughts about mine. If you want to leave it as a comment that is fine. Or you can email it to me at reelandsteel.com@gmail.com.

Have you ever tried fly fishing? Well I have and it is freaking hard. First you have to buy a new pole and reel. There are so many choices so I bought the cheaper rod and reel. Then there is the line and leader thing. That was no big deal it was kinda easy to pick them. The worse thing was the fly selection. There are truly thousands to choose from. After you make all those choices it is time to try to make a cast! Trust me when I tell you to find a nice open area to practice your casting!

My first time casting with a fly rod was in my backyard. It is pretty wide open so I thought I would be ok but I was wrong. I was told to kinda use the pole like a whip and keep letting line out going back and forth. Well it kinda worked but I really couldn’t put the fly were I wanted it to go. Instead I proceeded to hook my self or let it fly and land off to the side of were I wanted it to go. I continued to practice till I felt comfortable with doing this. Then off to the stream to catch some fish. Wrong! I swear I caught more trees and weeds then anything else. And when I did catch a fish I had a terrible time getting it in to the shore. The whole time my grandfather was laughing like crazy and telling me to keep trying and I would get better. Well he was right I did get better at it but I never really liked it. As they say it just isn’t my cup of tea! Since my grandfather passed I have never tried it since.I guess you could say that I am lazy like that because if I can’t pick something up in a short period of time I am over it!

I feel that is one of the great things about life is that we all are different but the same. I have some friends that love to fly fish and swear by it. If you get a chance to watch someone that can fly fish it is amazing how they can but that bait right were they want it. But for me I will stick to my regular rod and reel.

I would love to hear your opinion or thoughts about mine. If you want to leave it as a comment that is fine. Or you can email it to me at reelandsteel.com@gmail.com.

I was just thinking about all the fun I have had while target shooting. I think some call it skeet shooting or clay pigeon etc. All I know is that it is an awesome way to get out some of life’s aggravations while you shoot something that won’t get you jail time. Hopefully!!!

The gang of use would head to or friends farm and start shooting away. Besides being a bad shot I had a hell of a time with that damn clay pigeon throwing thingy. I swear I broke more of them than I got to fly. It isn’t that hard to do but I just didn’t get the hang of it. There were a couple times that we had a bunch of cups, dishes and plates that some one gave us that we used. Now that was fun to throw up and shoot at. Unless your friend almost get’s his head blown off!(sorry Butch) Always be sure of your target and beyond. Another tip is never ever play tag with the clay pigeons they hurt like hell when they hit you! You know that saying That is going to leave a mark!

The cost of the clay pigeons aren’t bad at all. But the good sturdy launchers are a little bit pricey but worth every penny. As far as the shotgun shell go I found that in the long run it was way cheaper to buy a reload machine and make your own. I really couldn’t tell a difference between the two. But like I have said many times already they say I suck at shooting! OK so maybe I am starting to believe them. When it was close to small game time I would shot the same shells that I would for hunting. That way I could see how the gun was with them. Other than that I couldn’t see spending the money on them.

It is really a good family outing were you can teach the kids about the safety of guns and have some fun. Hell pack a lunch and make a day of it. Just remember to clean up after you are done. even more so if you are on somebodys property that was nice enough to let you use it.

I have never had the opportunity to go to one of those outdoor target ranges. But I hear that they are really awesome. Maybe someday I will get the chance to try one out. I have used the local pistol ranges and they are great.

What kind of dog do you think makes the best hunting dog? I have never had a hunting dog. But have had both the pleasure and pain of hunting with both pure breed and also what some may call mutts. And by far the so called mutts were the best I have ever hunted with! It was my cousin’s dog that he got from a local rescue. I forget what the name of the dog. But I remember how he could be on a full run and get the scent of something stop and wait till we were ready and flush it out. Truly amazing with no formal training at all. The worst and funniest one was a friend of mine’s beagle named Sam. Every time we would go out he would let the Sam out of the truck and Sam would run for the hills. All you would hear is Sam Sam Sam Damn dog. Then when we were almost done for the day Sam would be waiting for us at the truck like clock work. One of the top dogs besides my cousin’s was a friend’s German short hair. It was like watching a great pass playfrom my favorite college team Notre Dame! The way that the dog would search and point was enough to take your breath away. OK maybe I should make it a tie between my cousin’s mutt and the German short hair. Ok I officially call it a tie!

I have always wanted a German short hair and Chesapeake bay retriever but haven’t got one yet. I would love to hear what kind you would love to have. I truly believe that we should get our pets from a shelter if at all possible. I feel so sorry for these poor animals what a terrible life they have. I am not saying that the shelter is bad just a sad place. We had a Doberman that we adopted from my wife’s Bitch of cousin which is a long story. But the dog who’s name was Harley was the best dog I have ever been around. He was the smartest dog ever. all the stories about how bad he was never happened with us. He had to be abused by her. I miss him everyday! We adopted a rotti lab mix from a place called Peaceable Kingdom. The best place and great people. She is now about 3yrs old and her name is Sassy. She so fits her name! I haven’t tried to hunt with her. She is very scared of noises so I don’t think she would be very good. She loves to go and smell the animals. I will have to give her a try soon.

If you haven’t heard yet a so called pro angler named Mike Hart has been banned for life from bass fishing tournaments for cheating. His career earnings are over $200,000. Which makes me wonder how many times this scumbag cheated. But at least now he is banned for life. The idiot stuffed lead sinkers in the fish that he caught to increase the weight of the fish. The officials are saying that he was caught red handed and admitted to doing it. They also stated that it is hard to catch cheaters because it is a catch and release tournament, the fish that are caught are put in a well on the boat until they get weighted at the end of the day and then released. But some do die and they are filleted and given to charity. Hart had three fish die on the second to last day and when they were filleted they all contained lead sinkers. The officials waited to talk to him until he weighted in on the final day with his limit of five bass. And low and behold all of his fish had sinkers in them. He tied a small hook on a short piece of line with the weight thinking that it would stop it from going in the stomach of the fish. I may not be an expert but for the fish that have been released with this sinker in them couldn’t have been good. I am not sure if they are going to charge him with any criminal charges but they should. They say that they are looking for ways to stop the cheaters so if you have any ideas I am sure they would love to hear from you.

Some may say that it is only a few ounces. But when you are talking about the difference between the winner of this tournament was 31.44 pounds and second place was 30.98. That is less that what Hart got caught adding to his fish. And the winner of this one got like $50,000 in cash and a new loaded bass boat. Nice job Clifford Pirch congrats!!!

This guy just gave more fuel to the ones that are against those like me that love to enjoy the outdoors. It is really sad to know that some people cheat at everything anymore. It just makes things worse for the people that play by the rules and that sucks! I am sure this won’t be the last idiot to cheat but I hope that they all get caught.

For as long as I can remember my allergies have been bad in spring and fall but this year the last couple days have been terrible. I haven’t been blogging the last couple days because of it. I can’t stop sneezing, runny nose and a headache. To top it of my sugar is high and I don’t know why. I have been taking Zyrtec and my nasal spray but it doesn’t seem to help. Then today my eyes started watering and itching. It really puts me in a crappy mood. Anybody have any good remedies for it! I did the allergy shots for many years and they helped a little but not much. It seems that every year when I get a bad attack I get bronchitis. I am sure hoping that this time is different. One of my buddies that is a pharmacist told me to try this thing that looks like a tea pot. You empty this pack of what I think is salt and add warm water then bend over the sink and tilt your head to the side, put the pot in the one nostril and let gravity do the rest. I found that if you aren’t bent over enough the salt water goes in your throat and taste like crap. But if it is done right it is fine. I did it twice today and it seems to work great. From what I have read it washes the bad stuff out of your sinuses.

I feel bad for my son by the way it looks he inherited not only my great looks but also my allergies. I know my son and me aren’t the only ones that are having a really bad time with allergies this year. A lot of people have told me that they are having a bad time this year. I wonder if it is the crazy hot weather we are having, the pollution in the air, the unhealthy diet we eat or maybe it is the worlds way of testing the new health care plan. I really hope that this allergy season ends soon I can’t stand much more of it.

With all the stuff from the allergies I am so glad that I didn’t spend money on a fishing or hunting trip or I don’t think I would have enjoyed it. But then again it may have been a different area and may clear up my problems. I wonder if my insurance would go for it!
